Teaching reading is a process. This process is not complicated. This should be followed to successfully help a kid learn how to read.
This is imprtant: Teaching a special kid is different. They have special process to follow. I'll make a module on that later on. But for now, I'll write a module as what we can follow for ordinary reading session.
1. Assessment.
This process involves knowing the kid, knowing what his background is.
2. Reading readiness.
There is a non-reader and a reader. Non-reader can lear since they already have the background to be able to learn. What is this background? Learners have the background sunch as the sounds and the facts around them.
3. Reading difficulties.
I will surely find time to make another module wchich will tackle how to assess if a learner has actually reading difficulties even before he tries to learn reading. And how to fix those kind of reading difficulties.
TIPS ON HOW TO ASSESS KIDS:
1. Teachers or parents should know the level of the kid.
These are the levels I know what I observe from my pupils.
LEVEL 1: The kids who belong in this level is almost empty. They don't know everything. They are the eadsiest to teach.
LEVEL 2: The kids who know the alphabet.
Level 3: The kids who can distinguish every letters.
LEVEL 4: The kids who cannot distinguish the different letters.
LEVEL 5: The kids who can distinguish the sound of each letter of the alphabet.
LEVEL 6: The kids who cannot distinguish the sound of each letters.
LEVEL 7: The kids who can blend consonant-vowel.
LEVEL 8: The kids who cannot blend the consonant-vowel.
LEVEL 9: The kids who can blend consonant-vowel-consonant.
LEVEL 10: The kids who cannot blend consonant vowel.
***The said levels above can be inserted under two categories. These two categories are: Kids who are willing to learn and the kids who are not willing to learn.
Knowing the kid before teaching him is really very important. From the teacher's background about the kid, he can teach the kid properly and more effectively.
WHAT TO DO WITH A LEARNER WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO STUDY READING?
In dealing with children, there's no better way to make them like something by inculcating in their mind that he has no choice but do that certain thing to do.
Example, many parents why their kids are not eating vegetables. But actually, a kid will eat if he who knowds that he has no other choice but to eat that food.
A kid must study and a learner who doesn't want to study should come to the point that he must learn. If he doen't like, make him like it. I don't believe that a learner will not study if he has no other choice but to study. It has just something to do with conditioning the mind.
If if will take "hitting the kid's butt" it is not a problem. Many parents just think that it is against the right of the learner. But parents or teachers have the right to do what is right to make the learner what they know the learner should be doing.
Sounds confusing to understand? I just mean that student must study it! Must learn to read. Whatever this might take.
WHAT TO DO WITH MISBEHAVING STUDENT WHILE STUDYING?
The good thing about education, stduents are actually eager to learn. And has open mind to learn. There are just factors why learner doesn't want to study.
Here are my lists:
1. The teacher is boring.
2. The teacher is not prepared.
3. The teacher is too kind.
4. The teacher is too strict.
5. The teacher is expecting too much from the learner.
6. The teacher is spoon-feeding the learner.
7. The teacher's expectation fromt he learner is too low.
8. The teacher is lazy
9. The learner experienced something extraordinary for him.
10. The learner dislikes the teacher or vice versa.
11. The learner is clueless of what the teacheR is talking about.
12. The learner is lazy.
13. The learner is trained not listening.
14. The teacher didn't train to sit down, listen and learn.
